Celendenis
Aydıncık, ehemals Gilindere
Celendenis is a medieval copyist's slip for Kelenderis, a harbour town of Rough Cilicia at Aydıncık, whose harbour, sheltered by a cape, appears on a mosaic found in 1990. The name is probably Greek, related to a word for an oak beam, fitting a rocky coast poor for farming but rich in timber. Myth named a Syrian, Sandokos, as its founder, and settlers came from Samos. Some ancient geographers made Cilicia begin here, and the map's red word Cilicia does start just beside it. Space was so tight that the red road line runs through part of the name.
