Arsinoe

Maraş Harabeleri

The ruins of Arsinoe lie at Maraş Harabeleri on a small cape of the Rough Cilician coast, where Strabo notes an anchorage. An inscription tells how it was founded under Ptolemy the Second on land of neighbouring Nagidos, after the Ptolemaic governor Aetos drove out the natives, and named after Arsinoe, daughter of Ptolemy the First; it soon seems to have outgrown Nagidos. Foundations, three early Byzantine churches and Roman tomb houses survive, and it was still a bishop's seat in 519. The map gives no figure for the road on to Celenderis, some twenty to twenty-five miles, about thirty to thirty-seven kilometres.
