Ceciliana

possibly Qalaat Najm (Syria), right bank of Euphrates

Listen to the story

Ceciliana was a town on the right bank of the Euphrates, in the Syrian district of Cyrrhestica; the geographer Ptolemy calls it Kaikilia and the Ravenna list Celciliana. Its location turned on a single figure. Older research made it twenty-four Roman miles from Zeugma, but the map in fact gives forty, so the town must lie further south, probably at Qalaat Najm in Syria. Towards Hierapolis the map counts twenty-four miles.
