Tauchira Colonia
Tocra
Listen to the story
Tauchira Colonia, now Tocra on the Libyan coast, was founded by settlers from Cyrene, and the Tabula marks it with a pair of towers and the title of a Roman colony. It had worn other names before. After Ptolemy captured it in 322 BC, a later Ptolemaic king renamed it Arsinoe after his stepmother, and Mark Antony called it Cleopatris. The town was known for its cult of Cybele, the Great Mother, who was still honoured here with a yearly festival at the end of the fourth century AD, even as a bishop from the town had attended the Council of Nicaea in 325.
