Theveste

Tébessa

Listen to the story

Theveste, now Tébessa in Algeria, was captured by the Carthaginian general Hanno the Great in 247 BC. Under Rome it grew into one of the most important road junctions of North Africa, the starting point of several routes into the province of Africa. From the reign of Tiberius the Third Legion Augusta kept its winter quarters here, and Trajan made the town a Roman colony. Later destroyed by Vandals and Berbers, it was rebuilt under the emperor Justinian, and its ruins still include the ancient walls and an arch of Caracalla.
