Beturiges
Beturiges Cubi
Listen to the story
Beturiges is the Celtic people better known as the Bituriges, a name that means 'eternal rulers'. They had two branches: the Cubi around Bourges, and the Vivisci around Bordeaux on both banks of the Garonne, whose wines the Roman writer Pliny praised. The entry on the map is usually read as the Vivisci, whom the Greek geographer Strabo calls the only Celtic people in Aquitania proper, living among Iberian tribes. Yet the map sets the name far from Bordeaux, near Cahors. Scholars see this misplacement as a sign that the peoples' names come from an older layer of the map than the road network.
