Gadaone

Cesana [5]

Gadaone is Cesana Torinese in Italy, a station on the road over the Mont Genèvre pass, five Roman miles below the top. The pilgrim from Bordeaux passed a changing post here called Gesdaone, and the silver beakers found at Vicarello, engraved with the stations of the road to Rome, write Gaesao or Goesao; one of them seems to call it Tyrium instead. The modern name Cesana very likely goes back to the ancient one. On the map the name is faint and hard to read, and it was long misread as Gacisone.
