Fundis

Fondi

Listen to the story

Fundis is Fundi, now Fondi, on the Via Appia between Tarracina and Formiae, whose Roman walls with four gates and grid of streets still shape the town. The poet Horace, travelling to Brundisium, was glad to leave Fundi behind, mocking a local official who paraded in his bordered toga. The land nearby produced the famous Caecuban wine, some claimed the emperor Tiberius was born here, and Galba was staying at Fundi when he was offered the governorship of Spain.
