Furfanae

Cerignola [2] · bei Cerignola [4]

Listen to the story

Furfanae, known only from this map, lay near Cerignola on the Via Traiana between Canusium and Herdoniae. The pilgrim from Bordeaux names instead a stop at the eleventh milestone from Canusium, and perhaps the old village of Furfana, or a shrine of that name, lay on the edge of today's Cerignola, which grew up at that roadside stop. A milestone found at Cerignola records that the emperor Trajan built this road from Beneventum to Brundisium at his own expense.
