Campi deserti et inhabitabiles propter aquae inopiam
Listen to the story
Campi deserti et inhabitabiles propter aquae inopiam is less a name than a warning: desert plains, uninhabitable for lack of water. The phrase is written across the land east of the Euphrates and south of the Taurus mountains, and it is usually taken to mean the Mesopotamian desert. It seems, though, to have been set down in the wrong spot. A similar label on the map, the Colchian wastelands, marks another empty land.
