Areae Fines Romanorum

Listen to the story

Areae Fines Romanorum is a phrase set down in the lands east of the Euphrates and south of the Taurus mountains, marking where Roman territory came to an end. It is usually read as "the areas that are the Roman frontier". It was once understood instead as the Arian borders of the Romans, meaning the boundary facing the Parthian empire, Rome's great rival in the east.
