Stefane

Çaylıoğlu, früher Istifan · Istıfan

Stefane is Stephane, a harbour on the Black Sea coast of Paphlagonia whose name lived on in Istifan, the old name of the village of Çaylıoğlu. Arrian praises its safe anchorage, and much later sea charts still note the shelter on the east side of the cape. On the map, though, it lies inland: the mapmaker, or his source, seems to have confused the coastal city of Amastris with inland Amasia and hung the coastal stations onto the wrong road. Only a column, spring houses of Roman or early Byzantine date and a fragment of a gravestone remain.
