Syrtade

İnce Burun

Syrtade is Cape Syrias, which Arrian simply calls Lepte Akra, the narrow cape; today it is İnce Burun, west of Sinope. The name was already garbled in the source that the map shares with the Ravenna list, where an i had turned into a t, and the final d carries an extra flourish, perhaps just a slip of the pen. Archaeological finds show that people lived here in prehistoric times. To fit all the stops between Amasia and Sinope, the mapmaker bent the road sharply back on itself, so that it enters Sinope from the right.
