Scina locus Iudaeorum Augusti

Medina Sultan, Sort (Barrington)

Scina Locus Iudaeorum Augusti carries its story in the name: Scina, the place of the Jews of Augustus, apparently a community of Jews settled here by Augustus or another emperor. It is thought to be the same as Charax, a Carthaginian trading post on the Great Syrtis, and is sought at Medina Sultan in Libya, the Sort of the Arab writers. The Arab geographer Bekri described a walled town with three gates, baths and markets amid gardens and palm groves, whose people traded only at fixed prices and spoke a language found nowhere else.
