Pella

Arkhaia Pella · Palea Pella

Pella, today's Archaia Pella, where Philip II and Alexander the Great were born, gets no picture on the map, and that fits its fate. From about 400 BC it was the seat of the Macedonian kings, reachable by ship up the Loudias, and by the 4th century BC the largest city in Macedonia. Once Rome made Thessalonica the seat of its governors after 148 BC, Pella sank; earthquake damage went unrepaired, and around AD 100 Dio Chrysostom called it a heap of broken pottery. A colony of veterans could not revive it, though it still minted coins until Gordian.
