Beroea
Veroia · Veria · Βέροια
Beroea, today's Veria, lies at the eastern foot of Mount Bermion. Here in 288 BC King Demetrius lost his throne to Pyrrhus, and after the battle of Pydna in 168 BC it was the first city to surrender to Rome. Pompey kept his infantry here in the winter of 49 to 48 BC, and the apostle Paul found willing listeners in its Jewish community. From the 1st to the 3rd century it was the seat of the Macedonian league and bore the proud title of metropolis. Yet the map gives it no picture, perhaps because by then it had lost that rank.
