Aholla

Ras Botria (Barrington) · Hr. el. Alia (Miller)

Aholla is Acholla, a town in Byzacena, part of Roman Africa, at Ras Bou Tria in Tunisia. It seems to have been founded by Phoenician, or Phoenicianised, settlers from Malta. In the Third Punic War it surrendered to the Romans and from then on was a free town; Pliny counts it among thirty such towns in the province. Rich villas of the 2nd century AD, with inscriptions and mosaics, have been found. Older research placed it at Henchir el Alia, citing a bilingual inscription with the town's name, but the book it relied on says nothing of the kind.
