Alaina

Listen to the story

Alaina may be the Eleia of the ancient writers, a place near Singara in the Mesopotamian steppe. If so, it saw a night battle: in 348 the emperor Constantius, after an early success, was utterly defeated there by the Persians in a surprise attack after dark. The site is perhaps Tell Hayal. On the map a branch road towards Seleucia seems to set out from Alaina, but older research thought that stations had dropped out here and that the branch really began at Hatra.
