Tegeas

Piali · Episkopi

Listen to the story

Tegeas is Tegea, near Episkopi in the Arcadian highlands of Greece, a union of nine villages in a fertile plain and a road junction on the way from Arcadia into Laconia. The map's plural form is rare, but it goes back to a poet of the fourth century BC who praised the bread of Tegea. Here stood the famous sanctuary of Athena Alea, and from here, as Herodotus tells, the Spartans carried off the bones of Orestes. The map sets Tegea on the wrong side of Mycenae, and where it ought to stand, it repeats the name Melena instead.
