Megalopili

Megalopolis · Μεγαλόπολη

Megalopili is Megalopolis, the Great City of Arcadia in Greece, founded around 368 BC by merging many small communities into a bulwark against Sparta. It had an unusually long ring of walls, a council hall for the Ten Thousand of the Arcadian League and, says Pausanias, the largest theatre in Greece; the historian Polybius was one of its sons. Yet the city never filled its walls, and the Greek geographer Strabo quotes a comic poet: the Great City is a great desert. On the map the name is garbled and one letter has faded.
