Mellosecto

Mont de Lans

Mellosecto, more correctly Mellosedum, lay somewhere in the valley of the Romanche on the road over the Alps from Grenoble to Briançon. The map alone cannot fix it: Mont-de-Lans, Mizoën and Le Bourg-d'Oisans have all been proposed. Below the hamlet of La Rivoire at Mont-de-Lans, remains of a Roman road survive, known locally as the Porte romaine, the Roman gate. The list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles the name as Metroselon, and other readings of the map give Mellosedo.
