Road station

Melantiana

Yarimburgaz? Hoşköy?

Melantiana, with one letter lost beyond recovery, is Melantias, the last station on the road before Constantinople, by the river Athyras, probably at Yarimburgaz or near Hoşköy. The name probably comes from the black, fertile soil of the district. The emperor Valens had a villa here, where he spent several days in 378 before marching out to his defeat by the Goths at Adrianople; in 558 Kutrigur Huns attacked the village. One gate of Constantinople's Theodosian walls was named after it. On the map both the road line and the distance on to the capital are missing.
