Mediolano

Châteaumeillant

Châteaumeillant, in the Cher, was the Mediolano of the map, a town of the Bituriges Cubi between Argenton and Néris. A remarkable milestone found at Allichamps gives three distances at once, to Bourges, to Mediolanum and to Néris; the one to Mediolanum is twelve leagues. The historian Gregory of Tours calls the town a castrum, a fortified place, and the modern name still reflects that. On the map the figure to Néris is too small and the one to Argenton too large. The name, also the ancient name of Milan, is Celtic, usually explained as the middle of the plain.
