Matiscone

Mâcon

Matiscone is Mâcon on the Saône, a town of the Aedui that Caesar used as a supply base in 52 BC. In the Roman period it was the starting point of the road to Autun, and in the fourth century it received a fort. A late Roman list of garrisons also records an arrow factory at Mâcon, the historian Gregory of Tours knows the town, and Merovingian coins read Matascone. On the map the a of the name is very faint, and some older copies lost its middle letters altogether.
