Matavone

Cabasse

Listen to the story

Matavone is Cabasse in the Var, a station on the Via Aurelia between Tourves and Forum Voconii. The key evidence is an inscription found there from the reign of Caligula, set up for the emperor's welfare by the pagus Matavonicus, the district of Matavo. A late Roman milestone in the cemetery of Cabasse counts thirty-four miles from Fréjus. The map gives twenty-two to Forum Voconii, where the Roman register of routes has twelve, probably the right figure. The list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles the name as Pataum.
