Martae

Mareth (Barrington)

Martae is Mareth in Tunisia, a stop on the road through Africa Proconsularis; the Ravenna list writes Marthae. The map puts it ten Roman miles from Tacape Colonia, the modern Gabès, yet the real distance from Mareth to Gabès is twenty-three miles, so the figure does not fit. Twenty-six miles lead on to Afas Lupeici. On the parchment two linked letters in the middle of the name stand wide apart, so that the road line could pass between them, and the third letter has barely any ink.
