Flumen Ausere

Wadi Fessi (Barrington)

Beside the river Ausere the map sets a road station of the same name, but places it below the river's course, so that, against the usual habit, the road never crosses the stream. The river is a coastal stream of the Little Syrtes, labelled at its source and reaching the sea between Putea Pallene and Zita; today it is the Wadi Fessi, on which Tataouine in Tunisia lies. A Roman military road from Tacape, modern Gabès, touched it sixty-six miles out. The name has been compared with the Ausuriani, a Libyan tribe.
