Listen to the story

The Selteri were a Ligurian people who lived in the Massif des Maures, the hills south-west of Fréjus on the coast of Provence. The Roman writer Pliny names them too, between the Camactulici and the Verucini. Older research placed them in the Estérel range north of Fréjus instead. They are among the comparatively few peoples the Tabula sets roughly in the right place, and names like theirs probably come from an older layer of the map, essentially from the age of Augustus. They should not be confused with a similarly named Alpine tribe listed on the great victory monument at La Turbie.
