Salentini
Listen to the story
The Salentini lived in the heel of Italy, around the cape that carried their name, today Capo di Leuca in Apulia. Legend had them arrive from Crete with King Idomeneus, joined by Illyrians and Locrians, and ancient writers derived their name from salt, saying they had sealed their friendships in the salt water. Rome celebrated triumphs over them in 267 and 266 BC. Their olive trees were famous, praised as early as Cato the Elder, and so were their goat herds and dogs. The map sets the name close to their towns, among them Brundisium, now Brindisi.
