Ruteni

Listen to the story

The Ruteni were a Celtic people of the southern Massif Central, whose capital Segodunum is today Rodez in France. The Greek geographer Strabo knew them for their silver mines, and near their town of Condatomagus the workshops of La Graufesenque turned out fine red tableware for the whole empire. In 52 BC they sent twelve thousand men to Alesia. The map, however, sets their name far from Rodez, between Bourges and Clermont, and scholars have read this misplacement as a sign that the names of peoples belong to an older layer of the map than its roads.
