Roxulani Sarmatae

Roxulanorum

Listen to the story

The Roxolani Sarmatae were a Sarmatian people of the steppe, nomads who, as the Greek geographer Strabo describes them, roamed with their wagons, tents and herds across the plain between the Don and the Dnieper. The map sets them on the far side of the Dnieper, away from the Don, and in black letters rather than the usual red. Its entry reflects conditions from before the turn of the era, perhaps drawn from Strabo himself. By the first century AD the tribe had moved to the lower Danube, raided Rome's Balkan provinces, first sided with the Dacian king Decebalus and then switched sides for Roman subsidies.
