Sasones Sarmatae

Saxona

Listen to the story

The Sasones Sarmatae are a people placed on the map in the lands east of the Sea of Azov, beyond the Taurus mountains. The second half of the name ties them to the Sarmatians, the horse-riding nomads of the steppe. The geographer Ptolemy also knew a people called the Sasones and set them in Scythia on the Asian side.
