Sengauni

Listen to the story

Sengauni is the map's name for a Ligurian people otherwise known as the Ingauni, whose chief town lay on the coast at Albenga in Italy. Where the extra S came from is unclear; it may have slipped over from the neighbouring name Veliates during copying. Livy first mentions the tribe, and Pliny and the Greek geographer Strabo call them Ligurians. Rome defeated them in 181 BC. On the map the name sits near the word Liguria, but far from their own town, which is drawn further to the left.
