Matreium, now Matrei am Brenner, was the last station before the Brenner saddle, the lowest crossing of the main Alpine chain and one of the oldest roads over it. Celtic bronzes and delicate Roman perfume flasks have been found here, and a milestone at Lueg on the pass counts one hundred and thirty Roman miles from Augsburg.
