Road station
Melfel
am Melfa-Fluss [3]
Listen to the story
Melfel marks the crossing of the Via Latina over the river Melfa, the ancient Melpis, which comes down from near Atina and joins the Liris between Fabrateria and Aquinum. The map names the station but draws no river, perhaps because it was dropped in copying, or because the stop came from a written list of stations. The Greek geographer Strabo calls the Melpis a great river; in truth it is only about sixty kilometres long.
