Teagina

Feodosiya

Teagina is probably Theodosia, today Feodosiya in Crimea, a colony of Miletus. A Greek coastal guide preserves an older, native Iranian name, Ardabda, meaning seven gods. Its harbour could hold a hundred ships, and after the Bosporan king Leukon took the city around 370 BC, it became the westernmost town of his kingdom and an important port for grain. In the fourth and third centuries BC immense quantities of grain were shipped from here to Athens, and the orator Demosthenes speaks of its market. Mithradates seized it around 107 BC.
