Listen to the story
Near Palmi, above Gioia Tauro on the Calabrian coast, a place still called Traviano may keep the name of Tauriana, and Roman finds have been made there. Cato the Elder, in his book on the origins of Italian towns, says its people were named after the river flowing past, that the Aurunci held the town first and then Achaeans on their way home from Troy, and that a seventh river, the Pecoli, marked their border with Rhegium.
