Tauromenio

Taormina

Listen to the story

Tauromenio is Tauromenium, now Taormina, on its terrace high above the sea, founded in 396 BC by Sicels as the successor of the old Greek colony of Naxos below. The father of the historian Timaeus later gathered the survivors of Naxos here, and in the great slave revolt the town held out against Rome until 132 BC. Its theatre, with its famous view of Etna, was rebuilt in Roman times for gladiators and wild-beast fights. On the map the name stands without any road or distance.
