Tegna

Tain-l’Hermitage

Tegna is Tain-l'Hermitage, on the left bank of the Rhône, a place of the Allobroges on the road from Lyon to Arles. It is best known for a famous altar recording a taurobolium, the bull sacrifice, and a few other inscriptions have been found in the town. A milestone of the emperor Aurelian, set up near where the Isère joins the Rhône and later brought to Tain, counts thirty-nine miles from Vienne. The list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles the name as Genua, and in the Middle Ages it was called Tinctum.
