Capriandas

? Şambayat, Besni · Adıyaman?

Capriandas may take its name from the Capreatae, a people of this region who, the Roman writer Pliny reports, had already vanished. Its ending with nd is an old Asia Minor suffix. The station is placed, with caution, at Şambayat near Besni, where traces of Old Stone Age settlement have been found. The name is securely known only from this map, yet an epitaph of AD 452 may carry it far to the west: on the Dalmatian island of Lopud, the early Christian sarcophagus of one Isaac, son of Antiochus, has a broken line that has been restored to name his home as Capreanda.
