Carantomago

Cranton, Cm. Compolibat?

Carantomago was a place of the Ruteni on the road from Cahors to Rodez. Its name is Celtic and has been explained as the field of Carantus. The exact site is uncertain: the neighbourhood of Villefranche-de-Rouergue is the usual answer, with Carenton south of the town, Compolibat and Le Cranton all suggested, and the name of Cranton may still echo the ancient one. On the map, the stretch on to Rodez is drawn as two.
