Caralis

Cagliari

Caralis is Cagliari, founded by the Carthaginians and, as ancient writers agreed, the most important city of all Sardinia. Under Rome it was the capital of the island and the seat of its governor, and its people held Roman citizenship. From its harbour, the Roman register of routes tells us, ships crossed to the port of Rome at Ostia, to Carthage and to Tabraca in Africa. Later it became the see of an archbishop. Yet on the map it is only a plain name, without a road or a city symbol.
