Road station
Aquas [S]aravenas
Kırşehir ?
Aquae Saravenae, the waters of Saravene, was a road station and spa named after a district of western Cappadocia that the Greek geographer Strabo calls Saraouene. On the map the name runs together as Aquas Aravenas, perhaps because the copyist wrote the double s only once. The site is usually placed at Kırşehir in Turkey, where iron-rich hot springs lie at Kargan Kayan; the baths were probably still in use in Byzantine times, and building remains attest Roman and Byzantine settlement. Long before, the town seems to have been an important Hittite centre. Another suggestion is Terzili Hamam, where a Roman bath has been found.
