Acontisma

3 km E of Nea Karvali (Greece)

Listen to the story

Acontisma, a javelin's throw, was a small fortified town on a hill east of today's Nea Karvali, where a narrow, steep pass squeezed the road between mountains and sea at the border of Macedonia and Thrace. A boundary stone from Trajan's time speaks of the road from Dyrrachium to Acontisma through the province of Macedonia, so here the Macedonian stretch of the Via Egnatia ended. Its walls go back to the 4th century BC and were rebuilt in late Roman times, probably against the Goths. The Bordeaux pilgrim calls it Hercontroma.
