Neapolis
Kavalla · Kavala · Καβάλα
Neapolis, the new city, is today's Kavala, the harbour on the northern Aegean opposite Thasos where the Via Egnatia met the sea route to Asia Minor; the map sets it a little inland, a slip of the copyist. Probably founded from Thasos, it struck its own silver coins and had a renowned temple of Athena Parthenos. In 42 BC Brutus and Cassius based their fleet here before the battle of Philippi, and the apostle Paul landed here. In Christian times it became Christopolis, but the map, like the Bordeaux pilgrim, keeps the old name.
