Fons
bei Kavala (? Vassilaki ?)
Listen to the story
Fons, simply 'the spring', was a stop on the Via Egnatia near Kavala in Greece, the ancient Neapolis. The map adds a small temple, which suggests a sanctuary at the spring; near Neapolis a grotto and an inscription dedicated to the Nymphs have been found, and the country around Philippi was famous for its many springs. A small sign after the name seems to stand for one mile to Neapolis, which would put the spring close to the town, perhaps where the road crossed the aqueduct that brought it water. Where exactly it lay is still disputed.
