Aquis Segete

Moingt

Listen to the story

Aquis Segete lay at Moingt, just south of Montbrison in the Loire country, where cold mineral springs rise and Roman remains, among them a theatre, have been found. Its name has been linked with Segetia, the Roman goddess of the sown fields, but a local goddess Segeta, named on an inscription nearby, is the likelier namesake. Milestones on the road from Feurs count in Gaulish leagues and name the free city of the Segusiavi. Some place the spa at Saint-Galmier instead.
