Spa
Aquis Calidis
Vichy
Listen to the story
The map draws the courtyard building of a spa for Aquis Calidis on the road from Clermont-Ferrand to Feurs. This is Vichy, whose main springs still flow at forty-four to forty-five degrees, and the name, 'at the hot waters', fits them well. Road remains, milestones and Roman finds settled the question against rival candidates such as Chaudes-Aigues. Among the finds is a thin silver plaque dedicated to Jupiter by a Gaul named Julius Carassounus.
