Aquis Calidis

~ Çiftehan

Listen to the story

The map draws a bath at Aquis Calidis, but no road leads to it: the red line is missing, perhaps replaced by the foot of the Taurus mountains drawn right beside it, and the figure of twelve miles has slipped beneath the mountain drawing. The name means 'at the hot waters'. The station lay in Cappadocia on a road towards the Cilician Gates, probably at the hot springs of Çiftehan in Turkey, still popular today. Local tradition says the empress Helena built the baths on her way to the Holy Land, and a Seljuk bathhouse stands on Roman foundations.
