Aquis Calidis
Burgaski Mineralni Bani
Listen to the story
The Goths who raided Thrace in 268 lingered for many days at Aquis Calidis, 'at the hot waters', enjoying baths that the historian Jordanes called the finest in the world and the best for healing the sick. The springs near Burgas in Bulgaria were already in use in the fourth century BC, and a round and a rectangular Roman pool survive. Grateful bathers, most of them Roman soldiers, left coins, jewellery, combs and hairpins in the sacred spring. Only under Justinian did the spa get a wall, so that people could bathe in safety.
